Welcome to West Coast Surf!

Come and experience surfing at a stunning location on the West Coast of the South Island- Tauranga Bay! Providing both first timers with a safe environment to learn in as well as providing world class waves for more experienced surfers.

We offer lessons for new surfers and coaching for the more advanced levels looking to up their skills in the water. Whatever your needs Mark will provide a unique, safe, fun and informative experience for you.

Your Coach

Mark is passionate about board sports. In the summer he loves to surf and in winter he transfers this to riding the snow. Mark has extensive coaching skills in both areas and has been coaching both modalities for 25 plus years.

In the surf, he has previously coached the NZ team to overseas venues and been a National title holder himself. He has coached Scholastic teams and helped members gain National titles of their own.

Our Area

Tauranga Bay is surrounded by beautiful walks and hosts a seal colony that has an excellent viewing platform and views out to the Tasman sea. The cliff top walk takes you along the edge of the coastline to the lighthouse and beyond to Cape Foulwind and the Star Tavern. There are numerous accommodation options in the area including our own place West Coast Surf Retreat where we can offer package deals on surf and stay.

Tauranga Bay is an idyllic surf beach in a stunning setting, tucked into a sheltered bay on the untamed wild west coast. It has a long sandy beach and is free of crowds. This creates a unique experience to learn to surf from and Mark provides a fun, safe environment to facilitate this.

Time and Tides

The best time to go surfing is generally on an incoming tide, from about 2 hours past low tide is ideal but any time can be worked with.
